Koinonia is a Greek word that I have been contemplating recently. It occurs many times in the Bible and it means “fellowship, sharing in communion”. It speaks not only to fellowship with God, but to the nature of and the intended function of the church community. When we connect with others in a meaningful way either spiritually, emotionally, or with a shared vision we experience communion. Any group that wants to make an impact with each other or within their community will pursue and cultivate “Koinonia”

In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians he is speaking to a very socially diverse group of early Christians. He warns against the problem of a developing “spiritual elitism” that is a result of the people defining themselves and others by their differences rather than their commonalities. There is a lifting up of one’s own culture and ideals above that of others.

All humanity, REGARDLESS, is made in God’s image. We are equal before God and among ourselves. As any group, when we come together in fellowship while sincerely valuing each other and what we as individuals bring to the table, we see the face of God in each other.
